I'm making a vampire flick in a couple of months. Also going for the much vaunted "classy" approach.

Shut up Kelvin. You've been moaning for the whole film.

Doesn't look too classy.
I'm talking about making a vampire movie where the words blood/vampire/buffy/slayer/guts/ dont have to be in the title. Where the focus is taken away from the Vampires and placed elsewhere instead of just relying on the fact that there are vampires in the film and so it is assumed to be interesting/scary/thrilling.
I'm going to reinvent the genre, that's it, too late - its going to be a drama.

Didn't Tony Scott do the clasy vampire flick. The Hunger was semi porn if I can remember rightly. Lesbian sex, and lots of moodyily lit sets.

Gaspode I'm trying to figure out whats wrong, for me, with your initial idea. I think the main problem is that pretty quickly you've dissolved the action into a court room drama. I mean within the first scene your hero is arrested for a murder. After that he's gotta be incarcerated as some psycho in a heavily secure prison. This kinda leaves the drama out and I feel the whole thing could dissolve into talking head after talking head. Its a stalemate situation which deprives the movie of action. Either he's gotta break out to move the story forward or he shouldn't be put in there so quick. I'd plump for the latter. Here's my take....
Carl is pulled into Leuitenant Park`s office. He has a new duty. Some strange goings on have been reported at 27 Lewing Street and Park wants him to keep an eye on the place. Carl heads down there and stakes it out. Pretty soon we start to get glimpses of Jac tooing and froing at awkward times of night. Carl calls Park and explains that Jac hasn't actually done anything wrong but does look dodgy. Park volunteers to come down. They sit and wait for Jac to return. Park gets very agitated `I've gotta bad feeling about this` he says `We've gotta suprise him lets go in`. Under Park`s direction they bust into the house, fleetingly discovering Jac gorging himself over a dead body. Jac is startled and jumps out of the window. We follow him and so do the police. Eventually behind some derelict building or under some dirty bridge Jac comes to rest... he has evaded them.
So who's the good guy and whos not? Well as the story progresses we learn that Jac is a vampire. We also find Leiutenant Park throwing himself into the quest to hunt Jac down. Carl is his trusty aid in this quest, himself shook up by the revelation that such things exist. But things twist around a bit when Carl suddenly realises that Park is actually one mean mo fo vampire himself... who's quest is actually to kill Jac for not towing the party line. Yes there is a whole underworld of vampires who have a secret order and Jac is a loose canon trying to get away from them, trying to negate his vampireness... but always feeling the thirst. Of course as soon as Carl discovers this he is immeditaly hunted down by Park and exsanguinated.
So now where do we lie? We've seen alot ot the film through the eyes of the evil bad guy and now we don't know who to trust... where does it go from here? who knows?
well I don't know either

btw... as others will tell from my story here... you MUST see Blade... it's wicked and you can't really make a Vampire flic without knowing what one of the more recent takes on it has been. You don't want to spend a year or two covering territory which has already been done before.

I agree with hairbrain that if you are going to write soemthing in a specific genre such as a vampire film then you must see all that you can of that genre. But i dont agree that going over old territory is bad, you just have put a new slant on it. Isn't that what blade did, I didn't like or loath the film but it did have its moments.

a lot of vamp. flicks are lacking class. That's what you need. I'm pretty much repeating what's been said. Looks good though, don't twist it up too much. Throw in a few sub-plots, maybe a small love thing, but try to stick to what your doing.

I think blade was just load of fight scenes strung together within a vague vamp context. I don't think it had a plot to speak of.

I came up with a new bit for the screen play, when the axe comes up after the beheading, there wont be any blood. Then, when The ME/Coroner (Sp?) examines the scene, he points out that Ben was already dead when he was beheaded, he can tell, by the lack of blood, because dead people dont bleed.
